How Long Does It Take to Upload 4K Video?

4K video is roughly four times the pixel count of 1080p, and the file sizes scale to match. Footage straight from a camera at a 100 Mbps recording bitrate consumes about 750 MB per minute, while a 4K export for the web at 40 Mbps is closer to 300 MB per minute.
That difference matters: an hour of camera-native 4K can be 45 GB, but the same hour exported for streaming is around 18 GB. Compressing before you upload is the single biggest time saver.

Camera-native files are much bigger
If you upload footage straight from the camera without re-encoding, multiply the times above by 2–3×. Camera codecs prioritize editing quality over size: 100–150 Mbps bitrates are common, and professional formats like ProRes are larger still. Unless the recipient needs the master file, export a delivery version first.
Cutting 4K upload time
- Export with a modern codec: H.265/HEVC or AV1 delivers the same visual quality as H.264 at roughly half the file size.
- Match the platform’s recommended bitrate (YouTube suggests 35–45 Mbps for 4K SDR) instead of uploading camera masters.
- Trim before you upload — cutting dead footage is free bandwidth.
- For very large projects, a wired connection with a high-upload fiber plan makes a bigger difference than any software tweak.
